Hershberg's previous works, including a richly illustrated Passover Haggadah and a Scroll of Esther, have attracted wide attention among Judaica collectors for their melding of traditional illumination imagery, contemporary design, and her own fine arts academic training. The Jerusalem Haggadah exemplifies this synthesis, taking as its theme the multi-layered character of Jerusalem as expressed through its architectural motifs.

New Lion

Lion Statue

From the Companion Volume:
"According to rabbinic tradition, the lion is 'the bravest among wild animals.' It is a fitting symbol for Judah, who is the paradigm of jewish leadership, and represents the special, 'royal' status of the Jewish people.

It can also represent the entire Jewish people: 'Lo, a people that rises like a lion, Leaps up like the king of beasts.' (Numbers 23:24) It can even be a symbol for God: 'A lion has roared, Who can but fear?' (Amos 3:8) Here, in the words of the artist, it is a symbol of 'God's ever-present guardianship over Jerusalem."
